 Maryann Clarin grew up sketching and painting scenes and animals near her childhood home in western South Dakota.  She went on to be come a Utility Engineer and managed to continue working at her art when her busy schedule would allow.  During this period she  worked in several mediums of watercolor, oil, and acrylic.  She produced several one-woman shows at the former President's Club of the First Federal Savings and Loan in Rapid City, SD.

In 1985, shortly before retiring from her engineering career, she was introduced to porcelain art.  Since that time she has become a certified teacher or porcelain painting for the World Organization of China Painters and also the International Porcelain Art Teachers Association.  She is currently a member of the South Dakota Paint and Fire Club, the North Dakota Midstate Porcelain Artist's Guild, and the current World Vice President for WOCP.

One of her original porcelain vases was selected in May of 1999 to be exhibited at the World China Painting Museum in Oklahoma City, OK through the year 2001.  In May of 2001, a mountain lion on an 8"x10" porcelain tile, matted and framed was selected for display in the museum until May of 2003.  The framed piece featuring the cat shown above is now on permanent display at the museum. 

Maryann finds porcelain offers the satisfaction of creating pots and vessels so cherished for generations by the native Lakota of her state, as well as being able to incorporate the skills of a watercolor artist in the porcelain paint medium.  She covers the surfaces of her own creations and the traditional fine white china with portraits, flowers, scenes, and the animals of plains life.

She currently teaches and paints near Piedmont, SD at the little farm she shares with her husband and her dog, Sofie.
