FLOWERS

The traditional "china painter" has always decorated tea cups, plates, and china plates with flowers of every kind.  In the late 1800's and early 1900's when there was a resurgence of china painting, several wonderful artists inspired the "ladies" to paint the flowers found in their beautiful Victorian gardens.  Franz Bischoff, George Lykoff, and Catherine Klein come to mind when starting a flower painting.  These artists painted mainly in watercolor with attention to the botanic detail of each flower or leaf.  Sonie Ames was a painter of the mid-1900's.  She too painted in watercolor and then transferred her designs to porcelain with the china painter in mind. Wanda Clapham was her contemporary and every china painter in the late 1900's started their art studies by reading her book, "Pass Me Another Plate".  The tiles she painted all those years ago to produce the color plates for the book are permanently housed at the World Museum of China Painting in Oklahoma City.  They are an inspiration to see.

In our studio, we paint all flowers.  Iris are my favorite flower so you will see many decorated pieces with iris, however the queen of the flowers is still the rose.  When one thinks of hand-decorated chinaware, you think of roses. When I changed from an acrylic artist to porcelain, my mother-in-law who is a china painter, had me paint roses, roses, roses.  To this day, Sofie's Dad would rather eat off a plate with cactus, he got so sick of roses.
